Lyric FAQs

recommend LyricTM

94% of Lyric patients would recommend Lyric

to a friend or loved one.*

*Based on results from two surveys totaling 134 patients who had worn Lyric for at least 30 days

  1. What is Lyric and how is it different?

Lyric is the first and only 100% invisible extended wear hearing solution. Once placed, it can be worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for months at a time. It is even designed to be worn during daily activities like showering and sleeping. Unlike many other hearing aids, Lyric is positioned completely inside the ear canal so that it provides natural sound quality while staying out of sight.

  2. How does Lyric work?

Lyric uses innovative deep ear technology to address hearing loss by leveraging the ear’s organic shape to capture sound and amplify it with minimal processing. With Lyric, sound enters the outer ear and flows naturally toward the ear drum, just as it would if you weren’t wearing a hearing device. Achieving this deep ear solution required breakthroughs in acoustics, processing, power supply, and packaging. However, the result is the only hearing device that can provide exceptionally clear, crisp sound around the clock for up to months at a time.

  3. How long does each Lyric device last?

Each Lyric device can be worn for months at a time, and up to a maximum of 120 or until the battery life ends. However, individual replacement needs vary because device battery life is subject to individual ear conditions.

  4. What does it feel like to wear Lyric?

Lyric has exterior seals made from a soft material specifically designed to contour to the ear canal. This soft exterior helps make Lyric comfortable to wear. After an initial adjustment period (usually between 7 and 14 days), you may not notice Lyric in your ear.

  5. Can I wear Lyric? / What type of hearing loss does Lyric address?

Lyric is designed to fit patients with a mild to moderately-severe hearing loss. A Lyric-trained hearing professional can assess the level of your hearing loss, ear size and shape, medical conditions, and lifestyle to determine if Lyric is the right choice for your hearing needs.

  6. How can I try Lyric?

Lyric is placed in the ear canal by Certified Lyric Providers who have received special training on how to fit Lyric. No anaesthesia or surgery is required. In fact, if your Lyric Provider confirms that Lyric is a good fit for your hearing needs, you can walk out of your appointment with a risk-free trial of Lyric (Professional fees would apply. Annual subscription begins the first day of trial).

  7. What does the initial assessment and cost?

Your Lyric Provider would charge professional fees for services performed during your initial appointment. These services may include a hearing assessment to test your type and level of hearing loss and to determine if Lyric is right for you, and may be covered by insurance.

  8. What does a Lyric subscription cover?

A subscription covers a year of Lyric hearing. Each Lyric device lasts up to 2-3 months at a time. When you need a new Lyric, you will visit your Lyric Provider for a replacement device. The cost of your subscription for one year includes up to 7 replacement devices. You never need to pay for repairs or battery replacements, and you will receive technology updates as they become available.

  9. Can I purchase Lyric without a subscription?

No. Lyric is sold by yearly subscriptions. Lyric is worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until a replacement device is needed. When the battery dies, you simply return to your Lyric Provider for a quick replacement visit. The number of replacements needed in one year will depend on your individual ear conditions, which impact device battery life. By purchasing a year of Lyric at a time, you know exactly how much you will pay for Lyric.

  10. How do I get a replacement if I am out of town?

If you are traveling and need to see a different Lyric Provider than the provider from whom you purchased your subscription, he or she may charge a small fee (not to exceed $100) to replace your device.

  11. Do I have to return to the Lyric trained hearing professional’s office each time I want a new device?

Yes, you need to return to your Lyric Provider’s office for a quick replacement visit when you need a new device. These visits typically take only 15-minutes because your Lyric Provider already has your device size and programming settings on file.

  12. Is Lyric safe?

Lyric is an FDA cleared device and has been extensively studied in hundreds of clinical research patients since 2001. Lyric was commercially launched in 2007 and has been safely worn by thousands of patients since then. If you experience any pain at all, or any discomfort for more than 7 days, see your Lyric Provider.

  13. Does Lyric require any surgery?

Lyric is NOT a surgically implanted device. Lyric devices are placed and programmed in the office by a Lyric trained hearing professional. No anaesthesia is required. The initial sizing and fitting process for Lyric takes about one hour.

  14. Can I remove Lyric on my own?

Lyric can be self-removed, if necessary. After you have been fit with Lyric, your provider will give you a tool called the SoundLync that can be used to take the device out or adjust the volume. However, Lyric must be placed in your ear by a Lyric trained hearing professional.

  15. Can I use headsets or earbuds with Lyric?

Yes, one of the benefits of Lyric is that you can continue to use external headphones and external hearing protection. Do not use inserted headsets, earbuds, or earplugs, because they may dislodge the device. (Standard iPod earbuds are okay to wear).

  16. Can I use my cell phone or home phone while wearing Lyric?

Yes, another benefit of Lyric’s placement is that it can be worn while talking on a cell phone or home phone. In fact, Lyric can be worn during many daily activities – such as sleeping, showering, exercising, and using headphones.

  17. Will Lyric set off a metal detector?

No. Lyric’s metal components are too small to set off metal detectors.

  18. Will an MRI, X-ray, or CT scan damage Lyric or place my ear at risk?

Lyric must be removed before you have an MRI. Unlike an MRI, an X-ray or CT scan will not damage or dislodge the device because a magnet is not used. However, you should inform the physician and/or technician about the Lyric device. If an X-ray or CT scan of the ear or head is needed, the device may need to be removed. Let your physician know that you are wearing Lyric if you are having surgery or a medical procedure of any kind.

  19. Can I swim with Lyric?

Lyric is water resistant, not waterproof. Therefore, underwater swimming and diving are not recommended. However, Lyric can be worn in the shower or during water activities in which the head is not fully submerged under water.

  20. Can I fly on a plane with Lyric?

Yes. It is safe to fly while wearing Lyric.

  21. How much does Lyric cost?

Lyric is sold through Certified Lyric Providers on an annual subscription basis. The price of a Lyric subscription is set by the provider. In general, this price falls within the range of traditional premium hearing aids.

  22. Is Lyric covered by Medicare, OHS or DVA?

The cost of Lyric is not covered by Medicare, OHS or DVA. However, your Lyric Provider can advise you on some financing and payment plan options.

  23. What happens if I’m not a candidate for Lyric?

If Lyric is found not to be your best option, you should be given alternative options, which better suite your hearing loss and your individual needs. This may include other invisible hearing aids. Audiologists at Ear & Hearing Australia are independent and not affiliated with any hearing aid manufacturers and committed to provide you with unbiased professional advice and offer you the most suitable hearing device options from the leading manufacturers.
